Homeopathy is a well established system of medicine developed in 1796 by the German doctor
Samuel Hahnemann. He was inspired by the writings of Hippocrates 'The father of medicine' who described two ways of cure: The 'way of opposites' to which conventional medicine is related, and the 'way of similar' which gave birth to homeopathy.
In homeopathy a complaint like insomnia, for example, might be treated by a minute dose of a substance like coffee which in its crude form would cause sleeplessness. This is an example of 'like cures like' one of the underlying principles of homeopathy. There are thousands of different remedies from the animal, mineral and botanical world and a patient will usually be prescribed a particular remedy which will most accurately match the symptoms. In order to assess which remedy will be the most helpful the homeopath needs to have a very detailed understanding of the way a patient experiences his or her symptoms. Homeopathy is a holistic therapy so a big part of the consultation will be will be devoted to the mental and emotional state of the client prior to or during the condition or disease. The first consultation usually lasts about one hour and a half. After the consultation the patient receives a remedy and is asked to come back for monthly follow-ups. The length of a treatment can vary. A complaint that has been experienced for many years will not disappear immediately. The homeopathic remedy enables the body to heal itself and can free the patient from mental or emotional blocks which restrict his or her lifestyle. During the course of the treatment many patients make significant changes in their lives and feel empowered. |
