Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy can help a person attain greater harmony in his/her life. This is achieved through enlarging the person's own access to fuller personal resources. We all experience and hopefully move through difficulties in our lives. Some problems, however, don't go away but start to affect our ability to feel happy and function effectively. This is where psychotherapy can help.

History

Gestalt psychotherapy is the form of psychotherapy being used at the Kirkbymoorside Natural Health Centre. It was founded by Fritz Perls (1893- 1970). He rebelled against the analytical approach of the time and moved toward a phenomenological and existential approach. Gestalt Psychotherapy is difficult to define in a few sentences but the words of Petruska Clarkson in her book 'Gestalt Councelling in Action' are useful. 'Gestalt is, above all, about the whole - smells, tastes, intuitions, the surrounding environment, the historical context, the planetary hologram. And all of these coexist like an excellent poem wherein which the artistry is never fully discovered, yet all the symbols and words, and cadences and shapes, interweave in a tapestry vibrating with life and tragedy and humour.'
